Coca-Cola Recalls Certain Products

Coca-Cola announced on 27 January 2025 that certain products have been recalled in the Netherlands. The company announced that the NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority), in co-operation with the Turkish Food and Drug Administration (Food and Drug Administration), announced the recall of certain specialised bottle and can packaging. Recalled products include Coca-Cola, Fanta Cassis, Minute Maid, Hawai Tropical and Fuze Tea are included. These products are not allowed to be used above the specified limits. Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Nederland stated that it considers the quality and safety of its products as the highest priority. NVWA warned consumers not to consume these products. Chlorate is a substance that can be found in small quantities in food and beverages and can carry health risks at high concentrations. Prolonged exposure to chlorate can lead to impaired thyroid function.

Chlorate, which was used as pesticides in the past, is not used for this purpose today. However, chlorate can be formed as a by-product during the use of chlorine-containing disinfectants in the food and drinking water industry.

Health Effects of Chlorate

The Dutch Food Centre states that the risk of chlorate harming human health is very low. However, individuals with thyroid disorders or severe iodine deficiency may be adversely affected by this substance.

The glass packaging of the recalled products is often used in restaurants, while the can packaging is found in various retail outlets. The recalled products have specific production codes and certain products, such as Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, are covered by this recall. The recall is limited to beverages with specified production codes.
