The Luxor Theatre is a building built in Kruiskade in 1917 and was the largest cinema at the time. In its first years, it screened two evenings a day, and in 1919 it was visited by almost 400,000 Rotterdammers.

In 1933, when the Nazis came to power, the Luxor Theatre fell on hard times due to its German owners. However, unlike other Rotterdam cinemas, the Luxor was almost the only building to survive World War II.

In the post-war period, both film screenings and temporary theatre performances were staged at the Luxor Theatre. In 1949, after an extensive renovation, it became a full-fledged entertainment centre. Especially the musical "My Fair Lady", staged in the 1960s, was a great success.

In the 2000s, Luxor moved to a new building in the Kop van Zuid district. Here it continues to entertain its audience with world-famous musicals such as "Les Misérables" and Rotterdam productions such as "De Marathon". Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2017, the Luxor Theatre has been an important part of the cultural life of Rotterdammers for a century.
